Wedding Getting Ready Photography

The getting ready part of your wedding day is where everything begins.
It is quiet. Then chaotic. Emotional. Then suddenly calm again.

This is where nerves show. Where parents hover. Where friends laugh. Where the day starts to feel real.

My approach to wedding getting ready photography is simple.
I document it honestly. I keep things relaxed. I capture what it actually feels like to be there.

No staging. No forcing moments. Just real memories, exactly as they unfold.

This part of the day sets the tone for everything that follows, flowing naturally into your ceremony and the rest of your wedding story.

You can see how I photograph the full day in my Wedding Portfolio.

Why the getting ready photos matter

The wedding morning is full of moments you rarely see happening.
A dad standing quietly in the doorway.
A best friend fixing a button.
A mum trying to hold it together.

These photos are not about perfection.
They are about people.

Years later, couples often tell me these are some of the images they treasure most. They show relationships. They show emotion. They show the story before the ceremony even begins.

This is why I always recommend full coverage from the morning onwards. It allows the day to be told properly, without rushing or missing anything.

You can read more about how full-day coverage works on my Pricing page.

How I photograph the wedding morning

I arrive early and settle in quietly.
No big camera presence. No pressure.

I read the room. I work around hair and makeup. I stay out of the way when needed, and step in gently when the moment is right.

Most of the time, couples forget I am even there.
That is when the best photos happen.

I focus on light, timing, and connection.
Nothing is forced. Nothing is rushed.

This approach keeps the morning relaxed and ensures your photos feel natural, not staged.

Bridal getting ready photography

Bridal prep is often the most emotionally charged part of the day.
There is anticipation. There are nerves. There are quiet moments and sudden bursts of laughter.

I photograph the full story.
Hair and makeup finishing touches.
The dress being done up.
Reactions from parents and bridesmaids.
Those few minutes of calm before everything changes.

I also pay close attention to light and space, helping you position yourself naturally so the photos feel clean and flattering without interrupting the flow of the morning.

First looks with family

Some of the most emotional moments of the entire wedding day happen quietly, before the ceremony even begins.

A dad seeing his daughter in her dress for the first time.
A pause. A deep breath. Sometimes tears. Sometimes laughter.

These moments are never staged. I simply make space for them to happen and stay ready when they do.

If a first look with a parent is important to you, I will help you choose the right moment and the best light, without interrupting the emotion. It stays private. It stays real.

Years later, these are often the images parents treasure the most.

You will often see these moments woven into full wedding stories in my Wedding Portfolio.

Groom getting ready photography

Groom prep is often more relaxed, but just as important.

Ties being straightened.
Cufflinks going on.
A moment alone before heading out.

Whether it is quiet and reflective or full of energy, I photograph it in the same way. Calm, natural, and unobtrusive.

These moments matter. They balance the story and show both sides of the day starting together.

The moments you might not realise are happening

Some of the most meaningful moments happen in the background.

Parents watching from across the room.
A quick hug when no one else is looking.
A deep breath before stepping into the dress.

These moments are easy to miss on the day.
They are impossible to forget once photographed.

This is where documentary wedding photography really matters.

Details and atmosphere

I photograph details as part of the story, not as isolated objects.

Shoes by a window.
The dress hanging where the light falls perfectly.
A handwritten note.
Small touches that help set the scene.

These images help your gallery feel complete and give context to the morning without ever taking over.

How the morning flows into the rest of your day

The getting ready photos are not a separate chapter.
They are the opening scene.

From here, everything flows naturally into the ceremony, the confetti, the portraits, and the celebrations.

By covering the morning properly, your wedding story feels connected and complete from start to finish.

Where I photograph getting ready moments

I photograph wedding mornings across Sussex, Surrey, Kent, and Hampshire, in venues, homes, hotels, and family houses.

I am experienced working in tight spaces, busy rooms, and calm settings alike.
Whatever your morning looks like, I adapt to it.

A calm start to your wedding story

The wedding morning deserves just as much care as every other part of the day.

It is where the nerves live.
It is where the emotion builds.
It is where your story truly begins.

If you want your getting ready photos to feel natural, relaxed, and real, I would love to talk.
