Kent gives you castles, barns, coastal estates and orchards, often within twenty minutes of each other. It’s one of the most varied counties in the South East for weddings, and one of the easiest to get lost in when you start looking.
I’m a Kent wedding photographer based in Eastbourne, which puts most of the county within about an hour. I’m shooting in Kent more and more, and this year I’m booked at Leeds Castle, The Secret Garden in Mersham and Crown Lodge in Hastingleigh.
This guide covers the venues I know, with an honest note on each: what the light does, how the day flows, and what you’ll actually get out of the space. I’ve also added my top 5 tips for picking the right venue at the end, plus the Kent venues I’d love the chance to shoot.

Leeds Castle
Best for: The biggest name in Kent, and a moat to matchPhotographer’s note: Grand stone walls, lakes, courtyards and formal gardens give you a wide range of backdrops. It works well for both intimate and large celebrations. You get dramatic portraits and plenty of space for natural candid moments.

The Secret Garden
Best for: Five ceremony spaces on the Mersham le Hatch estatePhotographer’s note: A rare one, in that you can choose from five licensed ceremony settings without leaving the estate. The cobbled courtyard, clock tower and old archways give you texture everywhere you point a camera, and the wildflower gardens come into their own in summer.

The Beacon
Best for: An Arts and Crafts house with 17 acres and huge viewsPhotographer’s note: Perched above Happy Valley with some of the best views in the South East, and voted Kent’s best venue in the Muddy Stilettos awards. The amphitheatre and Grand Pavilion give you real variety, and the grounds keep giving all day.

Westenhanger Castle

The Barnyard
Best for: Relaxed countryside barn weddings near SittingbournePhotographer’s note: An easy-going barn venue with open countryside around it. The kind of place where the day runs at its own pace and guests spill outside as soon as the sun shows up.

Kent venues I’d love to shoot
I haven’t photographed these yet, so you won’t get a photographer’s note from me on them. They’re well worth a look all the same, and I’d jump at the chance to work at any of them.
- Crown Lodge, HastingleighA relaxed, private setting in the Kent Downs above Ashford. I’m shooting here soon.
- Jacks Barn, TenterdenA rustic wedding barn in the Kent countryside, all timber, open space and easy-going charm.
- Penshurst Place and Gardens, PenshurstA 14th-century manor with the medieval Baron’s Hall and Grade I listed walled gardens, owned by the same family for centuries.

Finding your perfect Kent wedding venue
Kent covers a lot of ground, and the venues range from castles with moats to working farm barns you dress yourself. Whichever way you lean, here are the five things I’d look at first, based on what actually makes a day run well from where I’m standing:
- Work out which Kent you want
The county splits into very different places. The Downs above Ashford, the barn country around Sittingbourne and Canterbury, the castles inland, and the coast down at Hythe and Minster. Narrowing the area first saves a lot of driving on viewing days.
- Ask what time the music has to stop
A lot of Kent’s best venues are rural barns with neighbours nearby, and curfews vary more than you’d think. It decides how your evening ends, so ask early rather than late.
- Walk it at your ceremony hour
Light is the whole game. A barn that looks flat at 10am can be beautiful at 4pm. If you can, visit at roughly the time you’ll be saying your vows.
- Count the ceremony options
Venues with more than one licensed space, like The Secret Garden, give you a real choice on the day rather than a gamble on the forecast six months out.
- Find the quiet corner
You’ll want ten minutes alone together at some point. The venues that have somewhere for that are the ones couples talk about years afterwards.

Which Kent wedding venues have you photographed?
Old Kent Barn, The Barnyard and Oad Street near Sittingbourne, and Westenhanger Castle near Hythe. This year I’m booked at Leeds Castle, The Secret Garden in Mersham and Crown Lodge in Hastingleigh, so the list is growing quickly.
Do you travel to Kent from Sussex?
Yes, and there’s no extra charge for it. I’m based in Eastbourne, which puts most of Kent within about an hour. I know the roads and I always arrive early, so travel is never something you need to think about.
Do Kent wedding venues allow outdoor ceremonies?
Many do. The Secret Garden alone has five licensed ceremony settings including a gazebo in the gardens and a south-facing terrace, and venues like Old Kent Barn and Westenhanger Castle offer outdoor options alongside their indoor spaces.
What if it rains?
Kent weather changes fast, but it never stops the day from running smoothly. Nearly every venue here has a bright indoor space that works for photos. If the rain lifts we can step outside for a few relaxed portraits, and if it stays, I keep everything flexible and still capture a full set of natural moments.
What’s the best Kent venue for a large wedding?
Leeds Castle has the scale and the grounds for a big celebration, and Cooling Castle Barn and Port Lympne also handle larger guest lists. For something more intimate, The Secret Garden takes weddings from two guests upwards.
How far in advance should I book?
Most couples book 12 to 24 months ahead, and summer Saturdays go first. I only take a limited number of weddings a year, and my Kent dates are filling up now that I’m working in the county more, so it’s worth getting in touch early.
