A spring wedding at Wooton House

From Swords to LEGO: Ellen & Nick’s Brilliant Royal Navy Wedding at Wotton House

After a few weeks of forced downtime with a broken collarbone, I couldn’t have asked for a better return to work than Ellen and Nick’s Wotton House wedding. Held at one of my favourite Surrey wedding venues, their day was packed with love, laughter, and a whole lot of personality. Throw in a bit of Royal Navy flair, LEGO table challenges, and creative portraits in the Italian gardens—and you’ve got one unforgettable summer wedding story.

Photographs of Ellen and Nick’s wedding day

Military Elegance Meets Fun and Games

Ellen and Nick tied the knot in the elegant Old Library at Wotton House, a room filled with character, warmth, and light. As a military wedding photographer, I’m always thrilled to capture the regalia and traditions that come with a Navy wedding, and Nick didn’t disappoint in his Full No. 1 Royal Navy uniform. There’s something timeless about that sharp navy blue, especially in a venue as stunning as this.

From the moment the day began, there was a sense of relaxed joy in the air—exactly the kind of vibe I love to document. Ellen looked absolutely radiant, and together they were an amazing couple to capture throughout the day.

Portraits, Swords, and Sunshine

After the ceremony, we made the most of the sunshine and explored Wotton House’s Italian gardens—an absolute dream backdrop for couples portraits. There’s no shortage of beautiful corners and textures here, and Ellen and Nick fully embraced the fun of it. One of my favourite moments? The two of them pretending to duel with Nick’s naval sword—cheeky, lighthearted, and so very them.

We also managed a beautifully lit drone portrait from above the gardens—a bit of creative lighting magic to make the most of the golden spring light. It’s always a win when you can combine natural beauty with a bit of technical flair!

LEGO Masters & Laughter

The reception carried on the personal touches with one of the most unique table activities I’ve seen. Each table was given a pile of LEGO and challenged to build something creative. After the meal, Nick judged each masterpiece and awarded a winner—cue the laughter and playful competitiveness! Even the wedding cake embraced the LEGO theme, with different tiers reflecting different scenes. It was playful, unexpected, and a brilliant reflection of their personalities.

Creative Light and a Twilight Finale

As the day moved into night, we shifted gears for some creative lighting work. The highlight? A twilight portrait in front of Wotton House’s fountain, beautifully backlit for a touch of drama to round off the day. It’s always a pleasure when couples are up for a little evening creativity—it adds something extra to the story.

Grateful, Inspired, and Humbled

A huge thank you to Ellen and Nick for having me along to capture their day. And a special shout out to Paul from Burton Media, who joined me to help carry gear and handle lighting—an absolute legend and a huge help, especially as I eased back behind the camera post-injury.
